SCHOOLS: Nominate a FWISD Teacher!
BAYARD H. FRIEDMAN CHAIR FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE IN PERFORMING ARTS AND BROADWAY AT THE BASS CHAIR FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE IN THEATER AND DANCE APPLICATIONS
Fort Worth, Texas - Applications for the Bayard H. Friedman Chair for Teaching Excellence in Performing Arts and the Broadway at the Bass Chair for Teaching Excellence in Theater and Dance are now being accepted. The eligibility requirements and application form can be found on the Community and Strategic Partnerships page.
In 1999, Performing Arts Fort Worth established the Bayard H. Friedman Chair for Teaching Excellence in Performing Arts, which annually recognizes and rewards an exemplary Fort Worth Independent School District teacher in the area of general, choral or instrumental music. The current Chair is Stacia Graves, music teacher at North Hi Mount Elementary.
In 2016, Performing Arts Forth Worth added the Broadway at the Bass Chair for Teaching Excellence in Theater and Dance, rewarding teachers in either of these two areas. The current and the inaugural Chair is Cheryl Penland, theater teacher at Green B. Trimble Technical High School.
“The ability to ignite a lifelong appreciation of the performing arts requires a teacher of uncommon talent and uncompromising standards,” said Elaine Agather, Chairman Performing Arts Fort Worth. “As a FWISD teacher of the performing arts, your effect on both the children you teach today and the artists, teachers and audiences of tomorrow cannot be overstated.”
Deadline for submission to the Department of Community and Strategic Partnerships is 5 p.m. on Monday, March 27, 2017. Applications may be submitted electronically to Peg Murphy at peg.murphy@fwisd.org or delivered to Suite NW 259, 100 North University.
Teachers in Fort Worth ISD must meet the following three requirements to be eligible to apply:
K-12 teachers of instrumental music, choral music or general music.
Grade 6-12 teachers of theater or dance.
FWISD teachers who have taught in the District for 3 years.
Candidates who plan to teach in Fort Worth ISD during the entire year after receiving the Bayard H. Friedman Chair or the Broadway at the Bass Chair.
Mrs. Graves and Ms. Penland were chosen following a rigorous three-part evaluation process based on a written application and narrative; a “surprise” videotape of classroom instruction; and an interview session with a distinguished panel of judges.
The Chairs for Teaching Excellence program was established in the Fort Worth ISD in 1994. It is modeled after the university-level Chair program and is designed to recognize and reward exemplary teachers. This program is unique because of its role in a public secondary school setting and for its rigorous selection process.
The remaining 14 Chairs will be announced in the fall. All recipients will be recognized at the annual awards luncheon later in the year.
